Race & BDSM w/ Luna Matatas & Marla Renee Stewart – Ep 136

On episode 136 of American Sex Podcast, we talk about the intersection of race and kink with Luna Matatas and Marla Renee Stewart. Learn how casual and not so casual racism shows up in structural, cultural, and interpersonal contexts in the BDSM scene; if and when the labels Master/slave are appropriate; and if race play is taboo in all contexts. We discuss the hypocrisy of claiming kink spaces are no place for political or racial discussions while appropriating oppressive power dynamics for personal enjoyment, things allies can do to make these communities more welcome to all, and more.

I just found your podcast on Spotify and listened to this episode. It was very insightful. As a black straight male just starting out in my kink journey, I’m finding my Kink side and my History/Social Justice sides don’t mix. For an example when I go to a swingers club and find a playmate, in the back of my head there is a voice that is saying did we hook up because she likes me or because I’m fulfilling some BBC fantasy of hers? Your guests was very helpful and I regret that I just found you podcast. But you now have a new fan. Keep up the great work!!
